The Cytomegalovirus

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) belongs to the Herpes virus family. CMV is transmitted via blood, saliva, cervical and vaginal excretions, spermatic fluids, breast milk, tears and faeces. Although CMV infects >50% of the population worldwide it is rarely pathogenic.

How the virus affects the host?

Usually, infections are asymptomatic and often lead to an undetected latent infection and re-infection. However, among immunocompromised patients, such as AIDS, cancer patients, and recipeints of transplanted organs, CMV infection is a significant cause of disease and mortality.
