Pre-emptive monitoring of CMV
CMV has an ability to remain latent in the host after primary infection and be reactivated at a later stage. Detection of active CMV infection is crucial for relevant diagnosis and treatment. The monitoring of CMV viral load in consecutive clinical samples is used to target high-risk patients and to monitor the response
to CMV therapy. Quantitative real-time PCR is an important tool for a pre-emptive disease management strategy, i.e. early diagnosis, choice of relevant treatment and continued monitoring for the presence of invasive infection, in patients at risk of developing disease.
