BKV diagnosis

BK Virus can be diagnosed by cytologic examination of urine. The drawbacks are lack of sensitivity and large variation in concentration of virus in the urine between days, because of variations in volume. Magnetic resonance and CT scans are also used.

Real-time PCR is a method increasingly used for BK virus diagnosis because of its many advantages, such as high sensitivity, high specificity, and fast results.
