The Varicella Zoster virus
Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) is a member of the a-herpesviridae subfamily based on biological and structural similarities.
Diseases caused by Varicella Zoster virus
VZV may cause visceral complications of the lungs, liver and central nervous system in immunocompromised children and VZV retinitis, acute renal necrosis and chronic progressive encephalitis in HIV patients. In addition, Herpes zoster (shingles) may be confused with HSV and appropriate laboratory tests are often required for support of the correct diagnosis. Acyclovir has been the mainstay for treating severe VZV infections. However, newer antiviral agents, including valacyclovir and famciclovir, have expanded therapeutic options for treating adults with herpes zoster.
