New article in Journal of Clinical Virology comparing affigene CMV trender and Abbott CMV PCR kit

2010-06-01

A new article in Journal of Clinical Virology by Gracia-Ahufinger el al. compares the analytical performance of the affigene® CMV trender assay and the CMV PCR Kit from Abbott.

The study was carried out at two different hospitals, testing allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients. One site used the affigene CMV trender kit for analysis together with sample preparation with the affigene DNA extraction kit. The other site used the Abbott kit in combination with the Abbott M2000 SP automated sample preparation system. To compare the performance, the study included analysis of the OptiQuant CMV DNA quantification panel. The study shows:

  • CMV trender is more accurate compared to expected results.
  • affigene DNA exctration performs better than the Abbott automatic sample prep system.

  • CMV trender titers were higher than those from Abbott, and proved to be more accurate when comparing with the results from quantitation panel analysis. According to the authors:

"The data of the present study demonstrate that the DNA extraction method from Affigene was more efficient than the automated system from Abbott. Nevertheless, we found that CMV DNA viral loads quantified with the Affigene Trender assay were of higher magnitude than those measured with the Abbott assay even when samples were extracted manually (Affigene manual Kit)..."1

"Nevertheless, data obtained with the analysis of the OptiQuant CMV DNA quantification panel at each hospital indicated the Affigene PCR assay performs better than the Abbot PCR assay, in that it provides a more accurate estimation of CMV DNA load" 1
